A Dying Song Worth Learning

Nic and Dale taught me two new songs last Sunday evening. I enjoyed them both, but “Abide with Me” stood out as one I need to commit to memory. At a conference I attended, J. I. Packer spoke about worship and death. As he spoke he began to quote a hymn that helps him consider heaven and embrace death. I will admit I generally don’t choose songs according to those criterion. What song will help me consider heaven and embrace death? What do I want in my heart and on my lips when my body is frail and passing away? That is a profound thought!

“Abide with Me” is one of those songs. It won’t help you finish your jog. It won’t help you get out of bed and get going. It will help you set your mind on things above. It will help you finish the race.
